MD/PA = DBR
DBR is a term that Ross‘ old drummer, Andy, would always use to describe a place that he has played at before. It’s technical meaning is “Done Been Rocked”.
Over the last seven months, Maryland and Pennsylvania have DBR twice now by the Ross King Band. I’m not quite sure how well they are recovering at this point, but the best thing to do in a situation of getting rocked this hard, is to just give them some time.
Anyways, I promised some videos, so here are some videos, along with a little recap of our five days on the east coast.
Ben, Ross, and I flew into Baltimore, MD on Thursday afternoon and hastily picked up our rental car so that we could get to our first show that night at the Gravity Bookstore in Lancaster, PA.
Ross and I had already played for the couple who owns the store when we did a concert at their church back in September. At the time, their plans to build the bookstore were still at the early stages, so it was great to get an invitation to come back up and do a show for them in the finished product.
The night turned out to be wonderful.
Over 40 people came out to hear us, and from what I could gather from looking at their faces, they weren’t entirely disappointed. Which was good.
This was the only show of the week that I used the pandeiro and snare on. The pandeiro, as you will see in the videos, is a percussion instrument that basically looks like a giant tambourine with a drum head on it.
Craig Weaver, another one of Ross’ drummers, used to use it and has graciously let me borrow it indefinitely.
To get the effect that we want, we tune the head on it down real low and then stick a kick mic underneath it while it sits on a snare stand.
The result is a very low bass drum type sound, and it is great when we have a small band or a small crowd, as well as a decent sound system to power the mic.

Anymore
On Friday, we of course went through the whole airport charade with Ross’ luggage, but eventually we ended up at our second show destination in Reisterstown, MD. This was our first actual house show of the trip.
The great thing about these house shows is that it’s meant for a smaller crowd, which creates a more intimate and interactive connection with the people we are playing for.
Well for our first house show, we were welcomed in by our friend Jill. She was about as nice a person that you will ever meet. Very down to Earth. Our time together in her apartment was a lot of fun and she even took us around downtown Baltimore on Saturday for a tour of the aquarium and some delicious Maryland seafood. It was great.
I love trying the food that the state we’re in is most famous for, so I definitely ordered me a crab cake, and it was scrumptious.
Keeper of the Way
Todd Wright flew in and met up with us Saturday night. He was going to be doing the speaking at the Sunday morning worship service that we were playing for. It was my first Todd experience and hopefully not the last. He’s a rather fun individual.
The Sunday morning service went great. Our friend Alex drove in from PA to supply some delicous electric guitar licks to beef up our usual three piece, which was impressive considering how beefy we already were.
But anyways, I love Alex, and he did a great job in helping us out. As did Todd with the preachin’.
After the service we managed to find a small window of time between the downpour of rain to set up the cornhole boxes and get a rematch of Texas vs. Maryland going.
The honest truth is that Texas lost 19-21. BUT!…we only played one game, it had started pouring during the last five minutes and it had been at least seven months since either Ben and I had played.
It was a little depressing that we only got to play one game, because Ross didn’t get a chance to play and he can very often bring the noise. I could sense that he had the cornhole itch, and the poor guy just couldn’t scratch it…
(Sorry, it’s a general rule that a joke must be made any time the game of cornhole is discussed.)
We wrapped up the trip with one last house show on Sunday night with Jason’s home group. It was wonderful. We ate some bbq, hung out, and then played a fun set for some people that really seemed to enjoy it. It was a great way to cap off our trip to the east coast.
Now we are back in Bryan where get to see the family again, which is always the best part about trips like these.
Hopefully we will return soon, MD & PA, and when we do, expect to done be rocked again.

Alex loves you too.
Had fun this weekend. We’ll have to have you guys up our way sometime soon to DBR the heck out of the Lehigh Valley.

Dangit Michael, I was hoping for ‘jerk’ status…
Seriously though, thanks for the kind words. Hope to welcome you back soon – next time we’ll hit NSA (but not with anything dangerous).
I loved this one! I’m glad you’re back in town safely and am so proud of you. What a wonderful experience.
I also think that you and Terri are so lucky to have a friend like Ross to marry you. He is truly amazing!
Love you!
